Grandpa's Holiday Train Garden Page for 2013

Since immigrating to the Baltimore area to be close to his train-crazy grandsons, the Assistant Webmaster has become enamored with the Baltimore tradition of Christmas Train Gardens. In collaboration with Chris Hancock of the Sykesville and Patapsco Railway, he has compiled this list of train gardens. Chris' printed list is available at some of the Baltimore area train displays and on his "Trainsrcool" website. The list is meant to be inclusive, in addition to the traditional Baltimore firehouse holiday train gardens, any train display, open house, etc., whether holiday themed or not, is included, with a rather broad geographic coverage as well.

Here are links to some articles on the history of train gardens:

Tracking Down a Seasonal Baltimore Phenomenon (Baltimore City Paper 2000)

Holiday Train Garden Traditions (Fire Museum of Maryland)

And you might enjoy, as I did, Paul Race's musings on "What Do Trains Have To Do With Christmas?"

We strive to maintain a comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date list of train gardens, displays, and open houses in the greater Baltimore-Washington DC area. Please help us by sending any corrections, additions, deletions, etc. to traingarden@wvmgrs.org

Union Station, 40 Massachusetts Avenue, NE Washington DC. At Union Station the Annual Holiday Train Display is a time honored tradition dating back over 20 years. The tradition started with the donation of the Original Holiday Train by the Norwegian Embassy as a part of their ongoing appreciation for the United States' involvement in World War II. Year after year the train attracts thousands of visitors and has become an institution at the Station. As the years went by, however, the train became more difficult to maintain as parts for the Old Norwegian beauty were becoming few and far between. Until finally in 2011 the original train was unable to be salvaged, and it seemed that this icon of Union Station was on the verge of being lost forever. However, after much work and renovation our Holiday Train Display will once again be on view in the Main Hall. The train now features 3 G-Scale LGB Steam Locomotives running on 200 feet of track. The train is to scale at 1:22 the size of an actual train. A mountain landscape with 40 new structures, 25 trucks and vintage cars, 100 trees along with people, dogs and cats make for a realistic setting. November 29 through January 3. Monday to Saturday 10am - 7pm, Sunday 10am - 6pm. Closed Christmas and New Year's. 202-289-1908, www.unionstationdc.com
